Dhaka University (DU) authorities have claimed Tk 11.41 lakh due from its teacher Samia Rahman, who has voluntarily retired from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.

However, Samia Rahman claimed that the university has no dues from her. Rather the university would give dues to her, she said.

On March 31, 2022 Samia applied seeking voluntary retirement, and then on April 26, the syndicate of the DU authorities allowed her early retirement from November 15 last year.

A letter signed on August 3 by DU's Registrar Prabir Kumar Sarker said, "As per the syndicate's decision, if you (Samia Rahman) do not pay the university's dues, then action will be taken as per the rules."

Asked about this, Samia, who is now abroad, told the media that the university authorities are harassing her since they lost the legal battle.

"They won't give me the money I deserve. So, they are making untrue claims," she told The Daily Star.

The High Court on August 4 ordered the government and DU to give all due service and financial benefits to Samia from January 28 last year, when she was demoted, till the date she resigns from the post of assistant professor.

The court also declared that the decision by DU authorities to demote Samia Rahman from the post of associate professor to the rank of assistant professor on charges of plagiarism was "illegal".
